Maplewood Karate

Is a Martial Arts program for the Maplewood and South Orange community. All families are welcome, men, women and children. The program starts at ages 8 years old and upward.

Chief Instructor, Louis Toledo 9th Degree Black Belt

Louis is 50 years old a father of five, four girls and one boy. Louis started his martial arts training in 1975 and holds multiple black belt degree’s in Japanese and Okinawan karate systems. Louis is a two time I.A.M.A Hall of famer where he received the Master Martial Arts Instructor of the year award two years in a row, 2008 and 2009.

In May, 2010 Louis received the who’s who in the martial arts international pioneer award, for decades of martial arts commitment, dedication and production of fine upstanding students. Louis is a former full-contact karate competitor and a United Nations Champion.

Louis is the founder of Shura Jutsu fighting arts, a mixture of Japanese and Okinawan core Karate, blended into an effective yet still traditional self-defense system.

"No acrobatics, expensive clubs or costumes".
Privet and semi privet instruction is also available.

Off the training floor Louis is an Information Technology professional, he has worked for fortune 500 companies such as IBM, Apple Computer and Johnson & Johnson. Currently Louis volunteers as a technology instructor for the HK Foundation Center (Youth Voices).



Expert Instructor, Diego Dumas 8th Degree Black Belt

Diego is 50 years old father of one and holds a 5th Dan in Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu. and an 8th Dan in Shura Jutsu fighting arts. Diego also started his martial arts training in 1975 and is a former full-contact karate competitor.

For the last 10 years Diego has been training and competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) and is a certified MMA referee. Diego is also an I.A.M.A hall of famer were he received the martial arts master of the year award in 2009. Diego is the cardio / conditioning / kickboxing instructor on Friday nights 7:00 PM class.




What you will learn if you apply yourself.

We teach a fine mixture of Japanese and Okinawan core Karate, blended into an effective yet still traditional self-defense system.

In addition we teach sport karate for competition. Students do not have to compete in competition if they do not wish to and can enjoy the extra knowledge offered regardless. Sport karate at Maplewood Karate consists of Kata and Kumite (Forms and Sparring). Full protective gear is warn by all students for their safety during the sparring portion of this training.

To round off your Martial Arts training, a cardio / conditioning / kickboxing class has been added on Friday nights for adults only, Ages 13 and upward at 7:00 PM with expert instructor Diego Dumas.

All MKMAC instructors have passed extensive criminal background checks to insure the safety of all students.
