Maplewood Karate

Is a Martial Arts program for the Maplewood and South Orange community. All families are welcome, men, women and children. The program starts at ages 8 years old and upward.

Chief Instructor, kyoshi Louis Toledo
Louis is 49 years old a father of five, four girls and one boy and holds a 9th Dan in Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu, 6th Dan in Kobudo Ninja Ryu and a black belt in Okinawan Karate. Louis is a two time I.A.M.A Hall of famer where he received the Master Martial Arts Instructor of the year award two years in a row, 2008 and 2009. Louis is also a former full-contact karate competitor and a United Nations Champion.

Louis is the founder of Shura Shin Do, a mixture of Japanese and Okinawan core Karate, blended into an effective traditional self-defense system.

Off the training floor Louis is an Information Technology professional, he has worked for fortune 500 companies such as IBM, Apple Computer and Johnson & Johnson.

Expert Instructor, Shihan Angelo Gamboa

Angelo is 47 years old father of four and holds a 7th Dan in Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu. Angelo started his martial arts training in 1975. Angelo is a I.A.M.A hall of famer where he received the expert martial arts instructor of the year award in 2009. Angelo also assisted with hand-to-hand combat training for the United States Marine Corp.

Expert Instructor, Renshi Diego Dumas
Diego is 50 years old father of one and holds a 5th Dan in Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu. Diego also started his martial arts training in 1975 and is a former full-contact karate competitor. For the last 10 years Diego has been training and competing in mixed martial arts (MMA) and is a certified MMA referee. Diego is also an I.A.M.A hall of famer were he received the martial arts master of the year award in 2009. Diego is the MMA instructor on Friday nights 6:30 - 7:30 PM.

Expert Instructor, Renshi Marie Delarenzo
Marie is a mother of four three girls and one boy, holds a 4th Dan in Kar-Do-Jitsu-Ryu. Marie started her martial arts training in 1976 and has had an extensive career in the United States Marine Corp and is a Certified EMT.

What you will learn if you apply yourself.

We teach a fine mixture of Japanese, Okinawan core Karate and Judo, blended into an effective self-defense system.

In addition we teach sport karate for competition. Students do not have to compete in competition if they do not wish to and can enjoy the extra knowledge offered regardless. Sport karate at Maplewood Karate consists of Kata and Kumite (Forms and Sparring). Full protective gear is warn by all students for their safety during the sparring portion of this training.

To completely round off your Mixed Martial Arts training (MMA), kickboxing and Grappling is taught Separately on Friday nights, and is optional as well.

The instructors on this site passed extensive criminal background checks to insure the safety of all potential students.
